A few photos from today's Martyrs' Day celebrations at the Venerable English College. Cardinal James Harvey, archpriest of St Paul's Outside the Walls, was the main celebrant at the solemn mass, and a festal lunch followed which was attended by friends of the College including rectors from other seminaries and professors from pontifical universities. Cardinal George Pell was also in attendance. Martyrs' Day is celebrated annually by the Venerable English College to commemorate its 44 alumni who are martyred including Ralph Sherwin who was hanged in Tyburn on this day in 1581. The celebrations will conclude tonight with the veneration of his relic.
More than 40 priests from England and Wales celebrating the 40th, 50th, or 60th anniversary of their ordination joined the College community on 24 November 2016 for mass and festal supper. The Jubilarians' Night is an annual event held at the Venerable English College in which the present and future clergymen of the Catholic Church in England and Wales celebrate the joys and blessings of the priesthood together. As part of the Jubilee of the Homeless currently being celebrated in Rome, a group from the Archdiocese of Birmingham's Caritas branch led by Fr Michael White had lunch at the Venerable English College today, followed by a guided tour of the seminary. The first photo shows the group in the College church with four of our students from Birmingham, while the other photo shows College Guestmaster Ryan Service (also a Birmingham student) tell the group about the College's rich history.
