Greetings from the Rector

Welcome to the website of the Venerable English College in Rome, a seminary founded in 1579 for the training of Catholic priests to serve on the mission in England and Wales. At present there are 21 seminarians and 2 priests studying here, which includes a number from outside England and Wales. We invite all our friends to keep our students in their prayers.

The site on the Via di Monserrato has been home to the English for over 650 years. In 1362 a “hospice” was established, where pilgrims to Rome from the home country found a welcome. That tradition of hospitality continues to this day, alongside the core activity of priestly formation.

If you would like to support the work of priestly formation, you may wish to consider joining the Friends of the English College. Or you may want to take the opportunity to stay at Palazzola, our beautiful villa outside Rome, on the shores of Lake Albano.

Priests are called to bring the light of Christ into the lives of his people, touching their hearts with his love, raising their minds to knowledge of his truth and filling them with hope. It is our privilege to play a part in preparing the next generation of priests for this life-giving ministry.
